Vegetation Management at Lock 38/Bridgeport Area

The National Park Service has surveyed numerous trees in the Lock 38 (Bridgeport) area of the park. Several trees have been deemed diseased, dead, or hazardous while several more are growing too close (ten feet or less) to historic structures. In accordance with NPS Director's Orders #77 - Natural Resources Management, and #28 - Cultural Resources Management, the park's arborist has completed evaluations on trees that were identified as hazardous to people or structures and trees that were growing close to historic structures. Five mature trees will be removed, eight mature trees will have selective trimming, and numerous small growth trees (mainly Ailanthus) will be removed from adjacent to historic structures.
The work will be undertaken by a contractor with NPS oversight and NPS staff. The work will be in accordance with accepted industry standards and guidelines.
The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #E.3 – Removal of individual members of a non-threatened/endangered species or population of pests or exotic plants that pose imminent danger to visitors or immediate threat to park resources.
