Mono Pass Trail/Golden Crown Mine Wayside Exhibit

The Golden Crown Mine cabins are the best preserved reminders within Yosemite of the short-lived silver boom in the Tioga Mining District. Orlando Fuller established this camp on the windswept site at the head of Bloody Canyon in 1879, overlooking the historic Mono Trail. This remote location and lack of obvious National Park Service management gives the impression the site is forgotten. Hikers have already caused damage to the cabins by building fires and disposing of trash inside them. The cabins are presently at risk of being completely lost due to intentional or accidental misuse.

The project proposes a wayside display that will explain the historic signifcance of the mine site, and encourage visitors to participate in its protection. The display will be placed with existing interpretive exhibits outside of the designated wilderness zone at the Mono Pass Trail trailhead. The wayside panel will measure 30"w x 19.5"h. The overall height of the panel is approximately 3'. The panel installation requires one post hole to be dug and a concrete footer poured. It will be within the road prism in a previously disturbed area. The post hole will be 18 inches by 12 inches by 22 inches (deep).
