The proposed project involves conducting a prescribed fire on 6 islands (Mica, Squab, Gagnon, Strawberry, Alden, and One Stump) on Namakan Lake that total 66 acres. The purpose of treatment is to reduce hazard fuels and replicate a natural low intensity fire that will benefit pine forests. The burns would occur between early spring and early fall with summer being the most desirable time of year.
The Strawberry Island complex is also part of a Joint Fire Science Program experimental study of fire conditions and effects on archeological resources.
