2026 - Exterior Roof Replacement and Chimney Repair - Ferry Hill mansion modern CMU addition
Chesapeake & Ohio Canal NHP » 2026 - Exterior Roof Replacement and Chimney Repair - Ferry Hill mansion modern CMU addition
The Ferry Hill mansion building, at the time of its construction and throughout its historic use associated with the canal, was and remains the most prominent component of the plantation landscape. Although the building has experienced various uses over the years, the period of historic significance for this building ran from 1828-1924. Modern additions were constructed sometime between 1940-1950 and between 1950-1960 during its use as a privately-owned restaurant. After the NPS acquired the property, the building served as the park administrative headquarters until 2001 and briefly as a visitor center.
During initial repair and rehabilitation of the interior portion of the modern addition, NPS identified several roof leaks that allowed rain to enter the building. Interior repairs within the modern additions were already planned and underway; however, NPS determined that a full replacement of the roof of the addition was required. The NPS will replace the modern roof with asphalt roll roofing with underlayment. Aluminum drip edge will also be installed to ensure watertight condition and any damaged wood material, including fascia board(s), will be replaced in-kind. The modern chimney will also be repaired and parged to ensure it remains stable and watertight.
These repair and rehabilitation efforts will all focus on the modern addition of the building which falls outside of the period of significance for the mansion. Work will not affect historic components of the building and will thus not affect the historic integrity of the Ferry Hill mansion.
