Effigy Mounds National Monument General Management Plan

Dear Interested Party,
When I first arrived at Effigy Mounds National Monument in January 2011, one of the first things I saw on my desk was a copy of a draft version of a General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (GMP/EIS) for the park – along with a request to please get it reviewed as quickly as possible so we could release it to the public for comments (which we did later that summer). After two years of wrestling with it, it gives me pleasure to announce that the Final GMP/EIS for Effigy Mounds National Monument has now been released.
The General Management Plan is a 15 to 20 year strategic plan intended to provide overall direction for future management of Effigy Mounds National Monument. It will serve as a framework for managers to use in making decisions about how best to protect park resources, what levels and types of uses are appropriate, what facilities should be developed or removed, and how people should access the park. In 30 days, we will prepare a Record of Decision, which, when signed, will signal the end of this planning process.
This document has undergone many changes over its lengthy history. In its final form, I believe it charts a responsible, respectful course for the future, while remaining cognizant of mistakes made in the past. The changes that have occurred within its pages during my tenure here are a result of very careful thought and deliberations that have occurred with you and with our partners in the tribal and historic preservation communities.
It's taken a while to get here, but rest assured the work is not done. Implementing the vision that the plan outlines will require site-specific plans that will require additional public scrutiny and input. I sincerely hope that you will remain engaged with us as we continue charting a future for this wonderful place.
