The Flying W site (a.k.a. Sam Steelman Hole Primitive Area) is a high use recreational area. An increase in public use and a lack of defined roads and parking areas has led to unauthorized off road travel. An increasing number of vehicle trails and soil erosion are having a tremendous negative impact on the natural and cultural resources of the area resulting in a diminished recreational experience. In keeping with the guidelines of the General Management Plan (GMP) and Development Concept Plan (DCP), ONSR is addressing the environmental degradation.
The intent of the planning is to identify necessary modifications to the site to protect resources while providing for recreational opportunities.
