2026 - Rehabilitate Lockhouse 8 for visitor use

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » 2026 - Rehabilitate Lockhouse 8 for visitor use

The C&O Canal Trust and the park will rehabilitate Lockhouse 8 so that it can be included in the Canal Quarters Interpretive Program. This program, which was initiated in 2009, allows the public to experience life in a lockhouse via an overnight stay. Each lockhouse is rehabilitated and interpreted to a different period of the history of the canal, spanning its time as both a commercial navigation route and a National Park. Lockhouse 8 would be the eighth installment to the program.

Located in Cabin John, MD, Lockhouse 8 is a three bay, one-and-a half story random rubble building, constructed in 1830, following C&O Canal Company specifications for a 'Type I' lockhouse. It has subsequently seen multiple campaigns of modifications, repairs, and rehabilitation. The two most significant eras of modification were the NPS repairs of the 1960s to convert the lockhouse into staff housing and the early 2000s repairs undertaken in partnership with the Potomac Conservancy via a cooperative agreement. The Potomac Conservancy utilized the structure as an educational outreach center complete with exhibits on the first floor and office space on the second.

The current undertaking proposes to rehabilitate the lockhouse to the 1960s/1970s. Modern materials, including modern metal studs and drywall, modern wood flooring, and select trim and framing, will be removed and replaced. Floor joists that cannot be salvaged due to extensive wood rot and termite damage will be removed and replaced with in-kind material. The exposed masonry of the basement and select portions on the first and second levels will be repointed. Electrical utilities will also be brought up to current code.

During construction work, visitors will be unable to access the building, which was closed to visitors prior to work. Work should not otherwise affect visitor use or enjoyment of the area.
