2026 - Interior repairs and rehabilitation - Ferry Hill mansion
Chesapeake & Ohio Canal NHP » 2026 - Interior repairs and rehabilitation - Ferry Hill mansion
The Ferry Hill mansion building, at the time of its construction and throughout its historic use associated with the canal, was and remains the most prominent component of the plantation landscape. Although the building has experienced various uses over the years, the period of historic significance for this building ran from 1828-1924. Modern additions were constructed sometime between 1940-1950 and between 1950-1960 during its use as a privately-owned restaurant. After the NPS acquired the property, the building served as the park administrative headquarters until 2001 and briefly as a visitor center.
Currently, components of the building require repair and rehabilitation. The NPS will provide these repairs which include:
- - remove non-historic furnishings
- - minor plaster and/or drywall repairs
- - remove modern building materials such as carpet and/or drop ceilings
- - repair and replace modern bathroom components such as faucets and fixtures
- - repair and/or replace electric fixtures, as needed
- - minor repairs of wooden components such as floorboards, as needed
- - investigate structural integrity of brick masonry and plaster walls, as needed
These repair and rehabilitation efforts will be consistent with treatment as detailed in the Historic Structure Report for the building and will follow Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. No other impacts to historic properties or the environment will occur.
