Project Purpose and Need:
The purpose of this project is to integrate the recently acquired 140-acre tract Williams Hollow Farm (Greens Family Property) located along the park's northern boundary into the existing Fire Management Plan/Environmental Assessment (FMP 2005). The original Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the FMP 2005 was issued on April 15, 2005, and the plan was most recently revised in September 2025. Incorporation of the new acreage is necessary to ensure consistency in fire management objectives, ecological resource protection, and compliance with applicable federal planning and environmental review requirements.
The property is characterized as a mixed-forest system interspersed with small canopy gaps formed by linear features such as trails, unimproved roads, and stream corridors. Vegetation density within the tract ranges from sparse to moderately developed, and the overall community composition most closely reflects the historic dry-mesic forest type. Open fields comprise approximately 17 percent of the property and are believed to have originated shortly after Euro-American settlement, circa 1858. These fields are therefore considered contributing elements of the historic landscape and will be preserved in their current spatial configuration, along with other extant cultural features including roads.

Pea Ridge National Military Park (PERI) proposes implementing their Fire Management Plan (FMP 2005), a strategic planning document that defines a program of work for managing wildland fire within the park. The plan provides management direction for the use of prescribed fire, wildfire response, and non-fire fuel treatments, consistent with guidance contained in existing park planning documents and federal wildland fire management policy. The overarching priorities of the plan are firefighter and public safety, resource protection, and ecological integrity. PERI ensures that the newly incorporated tract is managed within the broader park fire program, providing for consistent application of fire management strategies across the expanded park boundary.
