Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » Carderock Siphon Cleaning - Fairfax County » Document List

The C&O Canal NHP will be issuing a special use permit to Fairfax County, VA and their contractor for the purpose of cleaning three sewer siphons that cross the Potomac River between Scott's Run, VA and the Carderock Recreational Area of the C&O Canal NHP. The purpose for this work is to clean these pipes for inspection and condition assessment. The work will be staged within the area of the picnic pavilion, and central to the upper-most sewer vault. The area will be fenced and the activity is expected to be completed in two months or less. Work will commence on or about October 3, 2005. All materials extracted from the sewer lines will be contained within special tanks and will be transported off site for disposal. Spill containment will be established. The remainder of the Carderock Recreation Area will be open to the public. This activity will help ensure that this infrastructure will be maintained in sound condition to avoid a emergency repair situation in the future.
