The National Park Service (NPS) has approved a permit request from the State of South Dakota to hold an Independence Day event at Mount Rushmore National Memorial on July 3, 2026. The event will include a fireworks display and other activities to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The NPS completed an environmental assessment (EA) for a similar event in 2020 (PEPC 89009). This EA incorporates the 2020 analysis by reference and provides new information and analysis regarding cultural resources, environmental contaminants, wildfire potential, and threatened and endangered species. Based on this EA, NPS reached a Finding of No Significant Impact and a Nonimpairment Determination.
