The USGS will undertake geological investigations at selected sites within Noatak National Preserve in the east-central part of Misheguk Mtn. 1:250,000 Quadrangle, north of Anisak River and east of Seagull Creek with specific sites on ridge tops adjacent to Picnic Creek and in the southern part of the Howard Pass 1:250,000 Quadrangle, mostly within 68° 15’ 158° 15’, 68° 25’ 158° 15’, 68° 25’ 157° 00’, 68° 15’ 157° 00’

The purpose of the work is to conduct geological investigations and collect samples for geochemical analyses and age determinations, concentrating on rocks of Devonian and Carboniferous age.

Work is scheduled to occur between July 18 and August 2, 2005 using a helicopter to access areas within the preserve. The team will operate from a basecamp outside the preserve. This project is mandated by ANILCA Sec. 1010.

The National Park Service has reviewed this project for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
