Rehabilitate South Rim and Spur Roads

Canyon De Chelly National Monument » Rehabilitate South Rim and Spur Roads » Document List

Dear Friends of Canyon de Chelly National Monument:

The National Park Service is considering rehahilitatitig restoring, and resurfajng approximately 10.6 miles of South Rim Drive from the western Monument boundary to the junction of Spider Rock Overlook Road in Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona. The project also proposes improvements to the Visitor Center parking lot to better accommodate large vehicles and to increase the number of parking spaces at the White House Overlook. The Cottonwood campground parking areas would be expanded and access gates would be installed at the overlook parking entrances and at the Visitor Center. The improvements are needed to improve visitor safety and experience, extend the life of the roadways, and better accommodate oversized vehicles. Fencing may be added along the roadway to improve visitor and resident safety and experience. Fencing would also provide added protection to cultural and natural resources and traditional practices such as livestock grazing.
Enclosed is an Environmental Assessmert (EA) that details the National Park Service proposal. The EA is also available for public review on the internet at http://parkplanning.nps.gov.

Two alternatives are described and their environmental consequences assessed. Alternative I is the no action alternative. Alternative 2 is the National Park Service's preferred alternative and the environmentally preferable alternative.

We welcome your input on the project and our efforts to avoid adverse effects to park resources. The public comment period closes 35 calendar days after the date at the top of this letter. If you wish to comment on the EA, you may mail comments to me at the address below, or email your comments to me at http://parkplanning
Our practice is to make comments, including names and home addresses of respondents, available for public review during regular business hours. Individual respondents may request that we withhold their home address from the record, which we will honor to the extent allowable by law. If you want us to withhold your name and address, you must state this prominently at the beginning of your comment. We will make all submissions from organizations and businesses, and from individuals identifying themselves as representatives or officials or organizations or businesses, available for public inspection in their entirety.
