A three-man team will travel to Seward Peninsula in late July to early August, 2005, to study the geology of the volcanic rocks around Imuruk Lake and Cloud Lake. They plan to collect some young lava flow samples and any small, identifiable pieces of organic matter overrun by the lava in order to conduct some geochemical studies and date the flows using carbon-14. Access to the lava fields will be made daily from Nome using a helicopter.
The National Park Service has approved this project after reviewing it for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
