Realignment and Widening of Old Highway 41
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park » Realignment and Widening of Old Highway 41
The Federal Highway Administration, Georgia Department of Transportation and CCDOT are collaborating on the environmental evaluation of this project which includes a Section 4 (f) evaluation and Environmental Assessment and FONSI and Memorandum of Agreement with the GA SHPO for adverse impacts to cultural resources.
The Preferred Alternative would widen and realign the existing two-lane roadway between Stilesboro Road and Kennesaw Avenue. The relocation of the roadway is the result of substantial coordination between Cobb County and the NPS and is intended to provide a buffer between Old 41 Highway and the users of the park. The total length of the Preferred Alternative is approximately 0.71 mile. The realignment would move the roadway to the north limit of the KEMOs property. At the western end of the project, the Old 41 Highway/Stilesboro Road intersection would be reconstructed as a single lane roundabout with a westbound through bypass lane and a dedicated northbound to eastbound right turn lane. At Kennesaw Avenue, a second roundabout is proposed.
The Preferred Alternative proposes the construction of a multiuse path tunnel beneath the south leg of the Old 41 Highway/Stilesboro Road intersection. This tunnel would allow the park visitors which utilize the KEMOs overflow lot to access the parks amenities without crossing Stilesboro Road at grade, eliminating the conflict point between automobiles and bicycles/pedestrians. The existing side path located along the southside of the Old 41 Highway would be maintained in its existing location after the construction of the project and the removal of the existing roadway pavement. This would provide a separation between the high traffic volumes on Old 41 Highway and the users of the pathway.
