The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to increase the entrance fee at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Sites to support projects that benefit visitors and protect park resources. The new entrance fee would become effective starting in May, 2024 and be required year-round (entrance to the park grounds remains free).

The proposed entrance fee increase would be from $10 per person to $15 per person. Those 15 years old and younger would still enter for free. The proposal also includes a new yearly park specific pass for both the Home of FDR and Vanderbilt Mansion for $45.

The NPS is seeking input from the public on the entrance fee increase. A 30-day public comment period will be open from January 16 through February 16, 2024. Comments must be submitted online through the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/hydeparkfeeincrease

The entrance fee is a critical source of revenue that is retained by the NPS to fund improvements to visitor facilities and services, and complete resource management projects. Both national park sites in Hyde Park, New York retain 96.5% of the entrance fee revenue, and in accordance with law, fees must be expended on improving, preserving, and maintaining park resources and programs that directly benefit our visitors. Over the past five years entrance fee dollars have funded the preservation of historic structures, trail maintenance, preservation of historic gardens and landscapes, and the care and conservation of historic furnishings in the homes.

The previous entrance fee increase at the Home of FDR was in 2018, which consisted of an increase in fees by $1. The previous entrance fee increase at Vanderbilt Mansion occurred in 2013, which increased the fee from $8 to $10. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this reflects a 20-30% decrease in spending power at these two sites.

The entrance fee increase would not change the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Passes that are valid for entry at Acadia National Park, including the Annual, Senior, Access, 4th Grade, Military Annual, and Military Lifetime passes.

The FDR Presidential Library and Museum, operated by the National Archives, also plans on adopting this fee increase to maintain consistent fees at the FDR sites. This fee increase is also occurring in concert with an increase at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, NY.

The entrance fee is authorized by the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act of 2004 (16 U.S.C. 6801-6814; P.L. 108-447, Division J, Title VIII) and requires that the public have opportunities to participate in the development of, or change to, an entrance fee established under the Act.
