Project to Rehabilitate Elk Mountain Campground Failing Water System

Wind Cave National Park » Project to Rehabilitate Elk Mountain Campground Failing Water System » Document List

Wind Cave National Park (WICA) has completed the compliance for the Environmental Assessment (EA) written to rehabilitate the Elk Mountain Campground water system.

The primary goals of the project are to rehabilitate the Elk Mountain Campground and picnic area water systems, provide for visitor satisfaction with appropriate and suitable facilities, and protect non-renewable cave resources from an unnatural source of water.

The existing campground water system was constructed in 1964 and consists of a 4800-foot transmission line from an existing water reservoir connecting to over a mile of distribution line in the campground and picnic areas. After 41 years in the ground, the deterioration of the galvanized steel piping has resulted in many leaks, non-functional valves, and noted deficiencies for fire protection.
