The Pueblo of Jemez Eagle Society group is proposing to have a 30-day camping activity in the northwest part of Valles Caldera National Preserve. There will be 15-18 adult males in the group. The group will set up a 10' x 20' tent for camp activities. There will be no new soil disturbance, as existing pits for the campfire and latrines will be utilized. The campfire will be an existing 2' pit with a cleaned surface around pit. Vehicle parking will be at the intersection of the VC08 and VC10 road; UTVs will be used to transport camping equipment and supplies along the VC10 road and an adjacent spur logging road to the campsite. The Preserve will institute an area closure around the campsite for the duration of the camp. A list of mitigations and restrictions is included in the attached Special Use Permit.

In addition, the NPS received a Special Use Permit application on September 8, 2023 from the Pueblo of Jemez Eagle Society for the take of a bald or golden eagle in the park, consistent with their U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) permit # MB72632A. NPS has prepared an Environmental Assessment for this proposed activity (see attached EA file attached) and has selected Alternative 3 to authorize take of one bald or golden eagle in the park, consistent with the seasonal requirements in the USFWS permit. A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been signed by NPS Director Charles Sams (see attached signed FONSI document attached).
