Geophysical Investigations of 44WM89

George Washington Birthplace National Monument » Geophysical Investigations of 44WM89 » Document List

The park is seeking to complete geophysical investigations on 44WM89 to better understand the area around Building X, setting the building into the context of its landscape, and filling in some of the data gaps left from previous archeological studies. The geophysical study is the non-invasive investigation of subsurface conditions in the Earth through measuring, analyzing and interpreting physical fields at the surface.
The area will be staked in a 25-foot grid with pin flags, to be removed once the geophysical study is completed. The geophysical investigations will be performed on the staked grid in two directions perpendicular to each other. Any anomalies will be logged in appropriate NPS-compliant software for post processing. The National Park Service will be provided the coordinates of all anomalies in an Excel spreadsheet.
The degree of success of a GPR investigation is based entirely on the composition of the soils and the depth and scale of subsurface targets.
