The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to change campground fees for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (BLCA) and Curecanti National Recreation Area (CURE), as well as to change boating fees for Curecanti National Recreation Area (CURE), including boat ramps at Blue Mesa Reservoir. Park managers are seeking public comment on fee changes. The proposed fees would take effect in January 2024 (Camping) and May 2024 (Boating).
BLCA and CURE fee staff members have just completed campground comparability studies for the parks' campgrounds park-wide. Although intended to be conducted annually, these studies were last conducted in 2015. Significant price increases have occurred at most comparable campgrounds in the intervening eight (8) years. The proposed fees bring the parks into closer alignment with nearby campgrounds. In the future, visitors can expect camping permit fee adjustments that more closely track the market.
CURE fee staff members have just completed boating recreation comparability studies for the park's boat ramps and water-based recreation amenities. These studies were last conducted in 2003. Significant price increases have occurred at most comparable lakes and reservoirs in-and-around Colorado in the intervening years. The proposed fees bring the parks into closer alignment with comparable lakes and reservoirs.
The 2004 Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) authorizes the National Park Service to charge fees for recreation amenities at National Park units. The law requires that recreational fees are appropriate to the benefits and services provided, and comparable to fees charged by others in the local area for similar benefits and services. Eighty percent (80%) of the fees collected at BLCA and CURE will remain at the parks to fund projects such as the rehabilitation of trails, upgrades to the campground amphitheater, improvements to water, sewer, and solid waste systems, and repairing boat docks, ramps, and other marina facilities.
