Assessment of Lichen Range Conditions in BELA

Bering Land Bridge National Preserve » Assessment of Lichen Range Conditions in BELA » Document List

In 2001, Western Arctic National Parklands (WEAR) received an NPS-NRPP grant to characterize the state of BELA's lichen range and to model BELA's lichen communities based on community structure and condition.

OBJECTIVES

1. To characterize the community structure of late-successional lichen communities within BELA's primary lichen landcover classes, and to identify late-successional "reference stands" both in BELA and in adjacent areas on the Seward Peninsula.

2. To determine the range of variability in lichen community structure along landscape gradients and the relationship of community structure to grazing.

3. To score stratified-random sample sites according to successional, landscape and grazing gradients.

4. To model lichen community gradient scores within landscape strata to allow for inferences of community condition on a landscape-level.

5. To provide the biological data required for a scientifically-based management plan focused on mitigation and protection of sensitive areas and special communities.

In 2005, field work will be concentrated on the Nome road system outside BELA. A few plots may be accessed by helicopter in BELA as determined by success of road-based sampling and time. All helicopter work will be conducted departing and returning to Nome. Field work is anticipated from June 7 to June 24, 2005.
