As part of a servicewide effort to meet accessibility standards, an interdisciplinary team from the National Park Service evaluated key visitor services on public land within Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve. These visitor services included arrival sites, informational kiosks, trailheads, beach access, and historic sites. The team assessed the sites and developed implementation strategies for improving the accessibility at each visitor service location.
"One of the most rewarding things about Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan fieldwork," explained Patricia Brouillette, National Park Service landscape architect and regional accessibility coordinator, "is the employee responsiveness and enthusiasm. The newfound awareness provides a lens that motivates employees to work with disability communities and to seek universal solutions that engage all visitors. This results in collaborative creativity, relevant solutions, and increases employee's pride in their work."
On land owned in fee by partners at Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, the Draft Accessibility Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan defines improvements that could be made to remove accessibility barriers. On National Park Service land owned in fee, the plan will guide changes to the way existing services, activities, and programs are provided by defining what barriers limit accessibility and listing actions needed to remove the barriers and increase accessibility for all users.
The National Park Service would like your input on the draft plan. Your input is important to the planning process and will help us as we work to ensure the Reserve is accessible to all visitors.
