The National Park Service (NPS) has finalized its plan for the South Ocean Beach Parking Area and Over-Sand Vehicle Entrance Road Reconfiguration project at Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. The Environmental Assessment (EA) was finalized and approved on November 29, 2023 through a Finding of No Significant Impact. Recognizing the vulnerability of this popular recreational area to dynamic coastal processes and storm-related impacts, the purpose of the project is to relocate current facilities to make them more sustainable and to reconfigure the area to manage visitor use more effectively. These changes will allow for anticipated dune migration and protection of infrastructure and facilities while maintaining a safe and enjoyable recreational experience for park visitors.

During preparation of the EA, the NPS consulted with federal and state agencies, tribes, interested and affected parties and the general public. Under the selected management action, NPS will relocate the existing traffic circle, increase parking capacity and reconstruct the South Ocean Beach parking area using an asphalt surface. The Over-Sand Vehicle entrance road will be relocated to a more sustainable location west of the new parking area and provide an increased vehicle queue capacity. Beach access boardwalks, comfort stations and other amenities will also be improved at this site. Specific details of this plan are available in the South Ocean Beach Parking Area and Over-Sand Vehicle Entrance Road Reconfiguration Environmental Assessment and accompanying Finding of No Significant Impact. These documents are available under the "Document List" in the navigation links to the left.
