Verizon Wireless currently only provides 1G service at the Crane Flat telecommunications site. That service will be retired and unsupported at the end of 2022. In order to keep service available at Crane Flat, Verizon needs to upgrade to 4G. This will require more power use, however there is no more power available at the site. Currently the power is supplied by two 75kW Cummins Generators from the Tuolumne Grove Parking lot and they are at maximum capacity.

There are future plans to run commercial power to the Crane Flat helibase, however an interm solution is needed before the end of 2022 in order to maintain Verizon's cell presence. Verizon proposes to install two 60kW generators and propane tanks to provide enough power to operate the proposed new Verizon equipment only. Once commercial power is installed at the site the generators and propane tanks would be removed.
