Proposed Pinehurst Stream Restoration Project
The National Park Service, in partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment, is holding a public scoping meeting on October 1, 2026 at 6:30 pm to present concepts and answer questions about the proposed Pinehurst Branch stream restoration project in northwest Washington, DC. The purpose of the project is to stabilize and improve degraded stream, floodplain and wetland conditions within the Pinehurst Branch stream corridor. These actions would protect water quality and public health, among other benefits.
The proposed project would take place on federal parkland administered by Rock Creek Park, a unit of the National Park Service. The proposed project area covers nearly 8,000 linear feet of stream and surrounding parkland, beginning at the border with Maryland near the intersection of Western Avenue, NW and Beech Street, NW and ending where Pinehurst Branch empties into Rock Creek, near the intersection of Bingham Drive NW and Beach Drive NW.
The meeting will be conducted online. Project information and concepts will be presented to the attendees, with an opportunity for persons to ask questions. To register for this meeting, please copy the following address into a web browser:

The National Park Service (NPS), in partnership with the District of Columbias Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE), is proposing stream restoration activities within the Pinehurst Branch stream corridor located in Rock Creek Park in northwest Washington, DC. The project is located on parkland administered by NPS. The project area extends from the Maryland-District border near the intersection of Western Avenue, NW, and Beech Street, NW, where Pinehurst Branch emerges from a storm pipe. The stream extends eastward approximately 3,500 feet through the Pinehurst Branch Parkway Park corridor before entering Rock Creek Park where it crosses Oregon Avenue and continues east until the convergence with Rock Creek at Beach Drive, NW. The project area includes approximately 8,000 linear feet of Pinehurst Branch within a roughly 670-acre watershed area.
The National Environmental Policy Act process for this project will start October 1, 2026 with a 30-day public scoping period. During this time, NPS and DOEE seek public input regarding suggestions, issues, or concerns associated with implementing the project. Feedback received during scoping will be used to inform the stream and wetland restoration design.
