Harkers Island, North Carolina

The public meeting was held on September 20, 2012. It was attended by about 30 people.

Description:
Cape Lookout National Seashore (the park) is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) for Passenger Ferry Facilities at the Harkers Island Visitor Center. This project continues the park's plans to establish passenger ferry service from Harkers Island to Shackleford Banks and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse on South Core Banks, as called for in the park's 2008 Commercial Services Plan. In August 2011, the National Park Service also selected a site in the Town of Beaufort for the second passenger ferry departure site.

Although existing Harkers Island Visitor Center facilities will be utilized for the ferry service, the EA will evaluate proposed facility improvements and amenities that would prepare the site for use by a contracted ferry concessioner and ferry passengers.

Meeting Directions/Instructions:
From Morehead City and Beaufort take Route 70 east across North River to Harkers Island Road. Turn right onto Harkers Island Road and drive 9 miles to the end of the road. Turn left at the sign for the Core Sound Museum and turn left into the Core Sound Museum parking lot.
