Ohio EPA and the National Park Service will host a public open house on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, to discuss the results of an environmental assessment (EA) regarding the Canal Diversion Dam in the Cuyahoga River, just north of the Station Road bridge trailhead at towpath mile marker 17 in Brecksville. The meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Happy Days Lodge, 500 West Streetsboro Road, Peninsula. Presentation begins at 5:15 pm

 
Description:
The EA was developed by The National Park Service in collaboration with Ohio EPA, Cleveland Metroparks, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Friends of the Crooked River. The assessment identifies an ecological restoration strategy to improve water quality while preserving the Ohio & Erie Canal's cultural integrity as a National Historic Landmark. The dam negatively affects the water quality of the Cuyahoga River resulting in the failure to achieve Ohio's Water Quality Standards.

As a result of the EA, the proposed action for the Canal Diversion Dam is to completely remove the dam restoring the river to its natural flow conditions. A pump will be designed and builtt to provide the desired amount of water for the preservation of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

The Ohio EPA is working with the National Park Service and community stakeholders to evaluate the dam's removal options to best help restore the Cuyahoga River to the river's natural condition. The EA and supporting documents are available for public review and comment through September 30, 2016 at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/brecksvilledam.

Take exit 18A on the left for Ohio 8 S toward Boston Heights/Akron
Continue on Ohio 8S
Exit #12 (Ohio 303 toward Peninsula/Hudson)
Follow W Streetsboro St (0.9 miles)
Turn into the parking lot on the right (across from Happy Days Lodge)

Directions from the south (Columbus):
Take I71 north (112 miles)
Take exit 220 for I-271 N toward Erie Pa
Continue onto I-271 N for 12 miles
Take exit 12 for OH-303 toward Richfield/Peninsula
Follow OH-303 E/W Streetsboro Rd for 4.4 miles
Turn left into the parking lot (across from Happy Days Lodge)

Directions from the east (Youngstown):
Take I80 west for 38 miles (toll road)
Take exit 180 for OH-8 south
Take exit 12 for Ohio 303 toward Peninsula/Hudson
Turn right onto W Streetsboro St (0.8 miles)
Turn into the parking lot on the right (across from Happy Days Lodge)

Directions from the east avoiding toll roads
Take I76 west for 37 miles
Take exit 23B to merge onto OH-8 N toward Cuyahoga Falls
Take the OH-303 exit toward Peninsula/Hudson
Turn left onto OH-303 W/W Streetsboro St (1 mile)
Turn into the parking lot on the right (across from Happy Days Lodge)
