This scoping meeting will discuss a variety of issues related to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area ranging from park security to backcountry recreational use.

Description:
The park will be discussing frontcountry security issues such as illegal marijuana gardens, trash dumping, and wildlife poaching. Since 2001, the National Park Service and Shasta County Sheriff's Office have discovered illegal marijuana gardens being cultivated throughout the park causing degradation to the park's mountain streams and accumulation of thousands of pounds of trash and support equipment.

Equestrians, hikers, hunters, and mountain bikers are encouraged to attend next Tuesday evening's meeting to discuss the management of backcountry roads, trails, and campgrounds with park staff. The park is proposing to improve its trail system by re-aligning trailheads and better defining parking areas to prevent erosion and trampling of vegetation and to restore riparian vegetation. Other improvements may include trail amenities such as picnic tables, water crossings, and trailhead restrooms. Superintendent Milestone stated, "We want visitors to use our trails and get the feeling these special trails were designed for them to enjoy."

Whiskeytown is a very popular area for mountain biking and equestrian activities. Hiking opportunities to the park's backcountry waterfalls are proving especially important to the area's recreational resources. Last month, 180 people came to the Visitor Center to attend a Saturday morning ranger-led hike to the recently rediscovered Whiskeytown Falls, the tallest waterfall in Shasta County.
