Demolition of Upper Frame Barn

In accordance with the responsibilities of the National Park Service under National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act, we are notifying the public of our intent to demolish the Upper Frame Barn at Friendship Hill National Historic Site (NPS), which dates to 1880 - 1900. Over the past several years the Upper Frame Barn's roof has experienced numerous collapses due to deferred maintenance from limited resources. The barn in its current condition is a safety and fire issue, and detracts from the Gallatin landscape of the 1780 – 1790s. Therefore, it will be necessary to demolish the barn and remove all remnants from the historic landscape. The barn site will be restored to open landscape.

Since the original collapse of the roof, the NPS has been in consultation with the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). They concur with the determination that there is no other feasible alternative for the barn and that its removal will not impact the National Historic Landmark status of the site in its entirety. The NPS continues to consult with the PA SHPO to mitigate the effects of removing this structure. The NPS will maintain a permanent file showing pictures of the barn both before and after its removal from the property.

The NPS welcomes all comments and concerns regarding the demolition of the Upper Frame Barn. Comments may be submitted online or by mail. You may either access the Planning, Environment and Public Comment website (PEPC) at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/frhibarn
