Notice of Public Scoping

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (NRA) has initiated an Environmental Assessment (EA) on a park-wide Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan.

The proposed action will provide an IPM Plan to reduce risks to the public, park resources, and the environment from pests and pest-related management strategies. IPM is a science-based, decision making process that coordinates knowledge of pest biology, the environment, and available technology to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage, by cost-effective means, while posing the least possible risk to people, resources, and the environment. The concept of IPM was incorporated into the National Park Service through a Presidential Directive on August 9, 1979. NPS policy has implemented IPM practices in the management of all resources on NPS lands including concessions and leased properties.

Glen Canyon NRA is soliciting public comments during the scoping period. The public is invited to help identify any issues, concerns or potential alternatives for the planning process and analysis. The EA will evaluate potential impacts to the natural, cultural, and human environment as a result of activities related to the proposed plan and will be available for public review during the summer of 2007.

Comments may be submitted online at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/glca. Comments may also be mailed to Integrated Pest Management Plan EA, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, P.O. Box 1507, Page, AZ 86040-1507.

Please be aware that your entire comment, including your personal identifying information, such as address, phone number, etc., may be publicly available at any time. While you can ask us in your comment to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.

All scoping comments must be received by February 28, 2007.

Sincerely,

Kitty L. Roberts
Superintendent
