Fiber Optic Line SR85-Why to Organ Pipe Cactus N.M.

The proposed alternative would install 22 miles of buried fiber optics line on the est side of State Route 85 between Why and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument headquarters, within unincorporated Pima County, Arizona. The project includes construction, operation, and maintenance of a telecommunications cable and ancillary facilities. The fiber optic would be placed at least 12 feet from teh edge of SR85 asphalt, with a maximum distance of distrubance at 30 feet from the edge of asphalt. Trenches would be dug using a vibratory plow and is estimated to be 36 inches deep by one foot wide. Trenches would not be dug through washes and areas with rocky substrates; rather the fiber otpics line would be bored under washes and through rocky areas using a horizontal directional drilling rig. Further, ingress and egress routes to and from the construction sites will be required approximately every 1/2 mile. To minimize distrubance, all construction equipment will be rubber-tracked. The imapcted area to accomodate equipment would be no more than 10 feet wide and the total project disturbance would be less than 27 acres.
