Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area Management Plan

The completed draft of the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area Management Plan is now available for public review and comment. As we move forward in the approval process, we encourage you to review the Management Plan and send us your thoughts by September 9, 2013.

National Heritage Areas are designated by Congress as places where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. Through their resources, Heritage Areas tell nationally important stories that celebrate our nation's diverse heritage. Heritage Areas are lived-in landscapes.

Completion of a Management Plan is required by the authorizing legislation (Public Law 109-338) for the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area. The Management Plan describes the Heritage Area's management structure, duties, mission, and goals, as well as its prohibition on the acquisition of real property. The Plan includes an inventory of the Heritage Area's natural, cultural, and recreational resources, and presents approaches to historic preservation, and the conserving of community and tradition. It offers ways to interpret Heritage Area resources, and identifies sources of funding to carry out the Management Plan.
