Comprehensive Telecommunications Plan and Environmental Assessment

Glacier National Park is proposing a Comprehensive Telecommunications Plan to address deficiencies in NPS radio, phone, and computer/data-based telecommunications systems that support park operations, and to establish a strategy to enable cellular and/or Internet connectivity for public and NPS use in developed areas where most needed. The plan is primarily geared toward improvements to NPS telecommunications systems. The plan also identifies four developed areas where commercial telecommunication infrastructure and cellular and Internet coverage would be appropriate, and establishes conditions and parameters on the amount, type, size, and placement of infrastructure, including restrictions on tower height and extent of coverage. The environmental assessment for the plan evaluates impacts to visual resources; historic districts; recommended wilderness; natural soundscapes; grizzly bears, Canada lynx, and wolverine; and visitor use and experience.
