Heavens Peak Fire Lookout Stabilization Project Environmental Assessment

Glacier National Park proposes to stabilize the Heavens Peak Fire Lookout in order to preserve it. The lookout embodies the National Park Service rustic design philosophy of buildings that are harmonious with the landscape and is significant for its association with the Civilian Public Service. The original historic fabric and structural integrity of the lookout is being lost through lack of maintenance and harsh weather conditions. The stabilization project would be limited to those repairs necessary to keep the lookout standing and minimize further deterioration.

A project team that included resource specialists evaluated the following impact topics: cultural resources; recommended wilderness; wildlife;, threatened and endangered species and species of concern; and natural soundscapes. No major effects are anticipated as a result of this project.
