Avalanche Hazard Reduction By Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway in Glacier National Park and Flathead National Forest, Montana, Final Environmental Impact Statement

Dear Friends:

The abbreviated Avalanche Hazard Reduction by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway in Glacier National Park and Flathead National Forest Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) is now available. An abbreviated FEIS has been prepared because no substantial changes were made to the Draft EIS. The Flathead National Forest and Montana Department of Transportation are cooperating agencies. Thirty days from release of this FEIS, a Record of Decision (ROD) will be issued.

The FEIS contains the executive summary, a summary of the public comments that were received on the October 2006 Draft EIS and the park's responses to substantive public comments that were raised during the review period. The park received 13,400 comments on the DEIS. Public comment was overwhelmingly in favor of the preferred alternative.

Four alternatives that ranged from explosive and non-explosive avalanche hazard reduction actions on Glacier National Park lands, Flathead National Forest lands, and within the adjacent BNSF and US Highway 2 transportation corridor were analyzed.

A copy of the ROD will be sent to you if you requested a paper copy of the document. You will be notified of the release of the ROD by email if you are on our email list.
