2012 draft CMP/EA

This draft document presents the proposed management actions for approximately 560 miles of the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. The Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail's long-term management and development will be guided by this plan over the next 15-20 years.

The Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail commemorates the Chesapeake Campaign of the War of 1812 and the writing of our National Anthem. The route follows the movements and activities of the British and Americans over 560 miles of land and water in Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Maryland, including the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac, Patapsco, Patuxent and Anacostia Rivers. The Trail was envisioned to support the commemoration, interpretation and promotion of sites around the Chesapeake Bay during the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, from 2012-2015, and to provide a legacy for these activities through ongoing public-private cooperative management to extend interpretation, resource preservation, and recreation opportunities related to the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake.

This document describes alternative concepts to protect, develop, and manage the National Historic Trail. Alternative 3 has been proposed as the National Park Service's preferred alternative, and this set of actions and programs is intended to become the Comprehensive Management Plan for the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail.

This document also contains an analysis of the impacts and consequences of implementing each alternative. In addition to the planning sections, this document includes a summary of the history of the trail and descriptions of resources associated with the trail.
