EFFECTS ON HISTORIC PROPERTIES OF THE POTOMAC PARK LEVEE PROJECT

The National Park Service appreciates the participation of all who were able to attend the August 19 NHPA Section 106 Consulting Party Meeting on the Potomac Park Levee Project. As indicated at that meeting, information on the project alternatives to be analyzed has now been posted to the Levee Presentation Alternative Matix below.

It is requested that comments from Section 106 Consulting Parties and the public be addressed by September 15, 2008 to the effects of the various design concepts upon the character defining features of resources eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the symbolic, landscape, cultural, and urban design values of the Monumental Core. Ideas for the avoidance, minimization, and/or mitigation of any effects deemed adverse to historic properties are solicited. The posted comment matrix identifies the four categories of resource present - such as cultural landscapes and historic districts, certain adjacent individual historic properties, and the five conceptual design options. Please make your comments on the Comment Tab above or enter them into the "Levee Alternatives Matrix" word doc below, saved with your initials, and forward them via E-Mail as an attachment to comments@potomaclevee.com indicating your organizational affiliation, if any, and contact information.
The material before you is part of an ongoing environmental and historic preservation compliance process which has been accelerated due to the compelling need to improve the effectiveness of flood control in the Monumental Core of Washington.

The National Park Service will determine an array of alternatives to be carried forward for further analysis in the Environmental Assessment now under development. It is anticipated that a Preferred Alternative will be selected, and information on the general cost characteristics and phasing implications of the alternatives being evaluated will be presented.
