Site Selection Public Scoping

The National Park Service, in cooperation with the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation, is accepting comments from the public on the site for the proposed National Global War on Terrorism Memorial. Three locations within the District of Columbia have been identified for consideration as a site for the memorial: Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street NW, Constitution Gardens, and along the Potomac River at Ohio Drive SW and West Basin Drive SW. Comments are being accepted on the project website https://parkplanning.nps.gov/gwot through April 14.

A virtual public scoping meeting to discuss the sites and answer questions will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The meeting can be accessed at this link. https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_MGQ2YmJkYWMtNDMwZi00ZjU4LWI2MDYtMjExOGVkZmQ2MjM3%40thread.v2/0?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%2216ed5ab4-2b59-4e40-806d-8a30bdc9cf26%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%2251be6f1b-2349-4ca2-97ee-f0452262bbef%22%7d

National Park Service officials will present the concept alternatives and be available for questions. The presentation will be available on March 21st. Please note that comments from the meeting will not be recorded, so please submit formal comments for the proposed improvements by commenting online or by mail.

In August 2018, Public Law 115-51 authorized the Global War on Terrorism Foundation to establish a commemorative work on federal land in the District of Columbia to commemorate and honor the members of the Armed Forces that served on active duty in support of the Global War on Terrorism. The foundation will design and construct the memorial at the selected location (design will be addressed in a future public scoping process), and the National Park Service will be responsible for its long-term maintenance following the dedication.
