Development Concept Plan/Environmental Assessment for the Carter Home and Garden

Over the past couple of years, National Park Service staff have been working on a plan with President and Mrs. Carter that details how the Carter family would like visitors to tour and experience their home after they no longer reside there. Although the property will not be opened to the public for some time, public input is an integral part of planning for the future. While collaborating with the Carter family, the National Park Service has written the Development Concept Plan/Environmental Assessment for the Carter Home and Garden. This plan is now available for public review and comment.

The plan identifies a preferred alternative and analyzes the impacts of possible management strategies and actions for the site. The preferred alternative calls for opening the Carter Home and Garden to public visitation when the Carters no longer reside there. The Carter Residence and Memorial Garden would be maintained and managed for self-guided and ranger-led tours. The Gnann House (currently occupied by the U.S. Secret Service) would be renovated to serve as a visitor contact station and staff offices. Detailed information about the strategies is available in the plan.

We welcome your input! The plan is available online where it can be reviewed and feedback can be shared. Thank you for your continued interest in this process and for being a part of the future of Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.
