FONSI Buxton Housing Septic System EA May 21, 2018

This document had determined that the NPS preferred alternative will have no significant impacts to the park's natural and cultural resources from the implementation of the actions proposed. The Southeast Acting Regional Director Sarah Craighead signed a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the construction of of a new septic system within the Buxton Housing area on May 21, 2018.

The existing septic drain field across from the Buxton Ranger Station occasionally floods during rain and storm events. When the septic drain field becomes saturated, and continues to remain saturated, due to standing water for several weeks at a time, it does not function properly. As a result, the Seashore must cease the use of the septic system's drain field until water dissipates. This system needs to be replaced for the health and safety of persons utilizing these services and failure to upgrade this septic system could result in a complete loss of service.

The NPS is now approved to construct a community septic system at one end of the park housing area in order to create a long-term solution that will be in compliance with public health and safety regulations. This action will relocate the current housing septic system out of the flood prone area and subsequently housing occupants will be able to remain in place due to an operational septic system. This project will improve overall long-term maintenance operations of the housing septic facilities and septic drain fields.

The NPS will begin construction of the new septic system during the 2018/2019 winter season. Construction operations would have no effect to our visitor's experience to the Seashore.
