Sir Francis Drake Boulevard Improvement Project EA/IS

The Environmental Assessment/Initial Study (EA/IS) with proposed Mitigated Negative Declaration for the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard Improvement Project is available for public review and comment from July 15, 2015 to August 13, 2015. The Federal Highway Administration Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD), in cooperation with Marin County and the National Park Service (NPS), is proposing improvements to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard within Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County, CA. The project includes improvements to approximately 12 miles of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard from the intersection with Pierce Point Road to the intersection with Chimney Rock Road. The proposed improvements primarily consist of resurfacing, restoring, and rehabilitating Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in a manner that will closely follow the existing roadway. In general, the roadway would be widened 1 to 6 feet to maintain a consistent 24-foot width with two 11-foot travel lanes and 1-foot shoulders. The purpose of the project is to restore the structural integrity of the roadway and enhance safety for all users while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.

The proposed improvements include: new asphalt pavement, new striping and signs, replacement of two cattle under-crossings, replacement of cross culverts, raising and realigning the short segment of road near Schooner Bay to help prevent annual flooding and minimize wetland impacts, and implementation of other safety features to meet current design standards. Funding for the project is currently programmed for 2018, but may be accelerated to 2016.

Please note that a separate planning process for road improvements to Limantour Road, Chimney Rock Road, Lighthouse Road and other NPS maintained roadways and parking areas within Point Reyes National Seashore was concluded earlier in 2015 (see Road Maintenance and Improvement Projects at Point Reyes National Seashore also through this NPS PEPC website).
