DRAFT_EA_Johnson Lake Mine Historic District Stabilization

The EA, prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), examines two alternatives. Alternative 1, the No Action Alternative, would not include stabilization or maintenance in the Johnson Lake Mine Historic District. Log structures would continue to deteriorate, the trail to Johnson Lake would continue to erode, and trees posing a threat to the log structures would not be removed. Unmanaged increase in vegetation would allow growth of a dense forest which will limit effective wildland fire suppression. Site protection, visitor protection, education, and outreach would be limited. Alternative 2, the Proposed Action, would perform stabilization and maintenance in the Historic District to prevent further deterioration. This would include stabilizing the historic mining structures, trail maintenance and construction, reducing fuels around the structures, periodic monitoring of sites, archeological testing, and educating park visitors on historic mining activities.
