Broad Branch Daylighting FONSI June 20 2012

Rock Creek Park (DC) – Stream Restoration Project Approved. On June 20, the National Park Service issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for a project, proposed by the District Department of the Environment (DDOE), to restore a tributary to Broad Branch creek in Rock Creek Park. Using grant funds from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the project will "daylight" two sections of stream on NPS and city-owned land, piped underground in 1937, and restore them to natural stream channels. The project also will create several stormwater retention facilities and regenerative step pool structures. These structures are designed to slow and clean the stormwater flow from the surrounding city streets and the adjacent Embassy of Peru, with which NPS and DDOE worked closely during project planning. The restoration project, which has a planned August start date for construction, will directly benefit Broad Branch creek by reducing the amount of sediment and pollutants which flow into the stream. The project will also assist the city and Rock Creek Park with meeting EPA-mandated goals to reduce sediment and pollution impacting the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.
