Eastern Chippewa Preferred Alternative Materials 2014

In 2004, the partners initiated the Corridor Planning Process for the Ice Age NST in Chippewa County. In 2005, scoping meetings were held for local officials and the public. The purpose of the process is to: identify a general area or corridor where the trail may be located, involve the public in this decision making process, and fulfill federal and state environmental compliance laws. Last summer, the partners held two open house meetings to provide the opportunity for the public to comment on two possible alternative corridors for the Ice Age NST in Chippewa County. Based on the input received at these meetings and criteria for placing the trail— significant geological and biological resources, scenic views, and linkages to communities and public lands— a 'preferred alternative' with possible route options has been identified. The route options are just possibilities, since all participation in the Ice Age NST is voluntary.

We would like to invite the general public to review and comment on the 'preferred alternative.' We will then compile and review these comments and complete the Chippewa County Corridor Plan and Environmental Analysis for review.

Topic Questions:
1. A preferred alternative has been proposed. It is designed to incorporate the best of the area's glacial features, particularly the Ice-walled lake plains clustered between Pike and Otter Lakes, and the impressive Otter Lake Tunnel Channel with the esker that meanders through it. Do you have any comment or concerns about the preferred alternative?
2. Approximately 23 miles of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail already exist in Chippewa County, between the Chippewa Moraine Visitor Center and the City of Cornell. Have you hiked the completed segments in Chippewa County or other areas of the state? Do you have any comments regarding the quality or stewardship of these existing trail segments?
3. Would you be interested in helping us complete the trail as a volunteer or by hosting the trail on your property? (Note that the trail can only be developed on the property of willing landowners who grant access, either through license agreement, easements, donation or sale of the property)

4. Do you need additional information about the Ice Age National Scenic Trail? If so, what? (Please provide the following information so we can respond: your name, mailing address, or e-mail address. Thank you.)
