EA 06-14-07
The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to relocate and reconstruct certain administrative facilities in the Brooks River Developed Area of Katmai National Park and Preserve:
• Relocate and replace maintenance facilities (shops, fueling, generators) from the Brooks Lake area to a new site off of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes Road. The existing maintenance structures would be demolished or converted to other NPS uses.
• Construct two employee housing duplex units near the new maintenance facility site. Existing housing units (four tent structures) in the Brooks Camp area would be demolished and the sites rehabilitated to a natural condition.
• Develop a conceptual design for future employee housing and other administrative structures near the new maintenance facility site. This project element is for concept planning only and not for construction. Maintenance and utility structures, laundry facilities, and concessionaire maintenance facilities are examples of administrative structures in the area.
An Environmental Assessment (EA) was written to analyze impacts of the proposed actions and of a no-action alternative. If approved and funded, project site clearing is expected to begin in 2007, with site preparation and construction to begin in 2008, and continuing in 2009 and 2010.
Public comments are requested on the EA through July 15, 2007.
