Badlands National Park Environmental Assessment for Emergency Road Repair at Cedar Pass Available for Public Comment

Interior, SD. - Badlands National Park's proposed emergency road repair at Cedar Pass and Environmental Assessment (EA) will soon be available for public review and comment on the National Park Service Planning, Environment & Public Comment (PEPC) website. The EA will be available for public review and comment for 15 days from May 28 to June 14, 2022. Comments will be accepted online at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/LoopRdCedarPass or by mail to the following address: Park Superintendent Badlands National Park 25216 Ben Reifel Road Interior, SD 57750. Online comments are preferred.

The National Park Service in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, Central Federal Lands Highway Division, proposes emergency stabilization to a section of South Dakota Highway 240 also known as Badlands Loop Road. The EA analyzes a proposed action for emergency road repair. Badlands Loop Road is showing signs of slope failure at Cedar Pass. Repairs are needed to mitigate health and safety risks that could result from additional roadway failure. Repairs to the road would stabilize the embankment, improve site drainage, repave the road surface, minimize the need for on-going maintenance, and minimize impacts to natural and cultural resources.
