Public Input for Foundation Document


The National Park Service is preparing a foundation document to inform planning and management of the Camp Nelson National Monument.

A foundation document identifies a national park unit's core purpose and significance, its most important resources and values, and the interpretive themes that tell its unique and significant American story. As a new unit of the National Park Service, Camp Nelson National Monument's foundation document will provide a basis for first steps in prioritizing park planning and data needs.

The park welcomes all interested persons to participate in this effort.

The National Park Service encourages all interested citizens to play a role in outlining the park's future by sharing their thoughts on the following four questions:

Topic Questions:
1. Why are Camp Nelson and its associated resources, including the archeological remains of the Union Army supply depot and refugee camp, important to understanding American history? What ideas or ideals does Camp Nelson represent?
2. What should people learn about the history at Camp Nelson? What are the site's most important stories?
3. Are there any key challenges or issues that should be resolved or addressed as Jessamine County transitions management of Camp Nelson National Monument to the National Park Service?
4. What are some of the biggest opportunities for the National Park Service to consider or address in collaboration with Jessamine County and the surrounding community at Camp Nelson National Monument? What is your vision for the newly designated national monument?
