Wheeler Peak Campground Determination of Eligibility

Constructed between 1966 and 1971, Wheeler Peak Campground is an outgrowth of the U.S. Forest Service's (USFS) Operation Outdoors, a program initiated in the late 1950's to improve the agency's outdoor recreation facilities. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Area, now Great Basin National Park, was in the USFS's first designated National Forest Scenic Area. Due to its association with Operation Outdoors, the Wheeler Peak Campground is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places as an historic district.
