Public Input on Foundation Document


The National Park Service is preparing a foundation document to inform planning and management of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument.

A foundation document identifies a national park unit's core purpose and significance, its most important resources and values, and the interpretive themes that tell its unique and significant American story. As a new unit of the National Park Service, Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument's foundation document will provide a basis for first steps in prioritizing park planning and data needs.

The park welcomes all interested persons to participate in this effort.

The National Park Service encourages all interested citizens to play a role in outlining the park's future by sharing their thoughts on the following five questions:

Topic Questions:
1. Why are the A.G. Gaston Motel and other places associated with Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument (16th Street Baptist Church, Bethel Baptist Church, St. Paul United Methodist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, Fourth Avenue Business District, and the Masonic Temple) important to American History? What ideas or ideals do these places represent?
2. What should people know about the struggle for human and civil rights in Birmingham? What are the most important stories?
3. What are the biggest challenges facing the National Park Service in setting up the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument?
4. What are the biggest opportunities for the National Park Service in setting up the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument? What is your vision for the new National Monument?
5. Do you have any other ideas or information you would like to share with the National Park Service about the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument? The park service needs your help as we work to rehabilitate the A.G. Gaston Motel. If you have any stories, old photos, or memories about the site that you are willing to share, please let us know and provide us with your contact information.
