Cedar Breaks National Monument Accepting Comments on Proposed Increase in Recreational Fees

Cedar Breaks National Monument is seeking public input on a proposal to increase the park's entrance and camping fees. This proposal is part of a larger National Park Service (NPS) effort underway across the nation. Based on public comments, parks may change recreation fees to align with the NPS's new standard entrance fee schedule, which was last updated in 2006.

Cedar Breaks is proposing to increase the entrance fee from $4 per person to $7 per person. The entrance fee is valid for seven days. The Cedar Breaks annual pass would increase from $20 to $30. This pass admits the pass holder and up to three additional adults to the park and is valid for one year from the month of purchase.

The camping fee would increase from $14 per night to $22 per night. Registered campers are provided with picnic tables, fire ring, RV/tent pad, flush toilets, and showers. The new campground fee would better align with campground fees found outside the park.

The new fees could be implemented in May, 2015. However, the fee increases and implementation schedule may change based on the results of public feedback. The park will develop a fee and implementation schedule that supports the local communities and interested stakeholders.

One hundred percent of the park's collected fee revenues are reinvested directly into the park. By law, these funds can only be used to help cover costs that are directly related to providing visitor services such as ranger-led programs and facilities such as campgrounds. With the exception of costs related to collecting fees, fee revenue cannot be used to fund recurring operational costs or to fund permanent employee salaries.

Recent projects funded with park fee revenue include the addition of showers and other improvements in the campground, trail improvements and maintenance, habitat restoration, and building a new ADA accessible trail from the Visitor Center area to Sunset View Overlook.

Future revenues from the proposed fee increases will be used to support and enhance other visitor services including maintenance of park facilities, additional upgrades to the campground, a new children's outdoor classroom/playscape, and picnic area improvements including a new covered picnic pavilion and restroom.

National park units are strong economic engines for Utah. NPS economic data from 2013, indicates that Cedar Breaks National Monument contributed $25.7 million to the area's economy and supported 353 jobs related to tourism.

Cedar Breaks has a per person entrance fee charge while many national parks charge per vehicle. National park entrance fees are not charged to persons under 16 years of age or to holders of the Interagency Passes - Annual (valid for 1 year from month of purchase), Senior (life time pass for U.S. citizens 62 years and older), Military (free annually), and Access (life time pass for permanently disabled).
